In front of the Matterhorn but away of the crowd: one of the most scenic hikes in the Swiss Alps and one of the highest hiking peak: the Mettelhorn

Who in busy Zermatt wants to enjoy the beautiful mountains unhindered has really to change the sides: From the well known left side with the Gornergrad to the peaceful, intact right (!) side. Passing through Zermatt we soon start a nice, more or less steep trail into a gorge and up over beautiful meadows to reach our simple mountain hotel, with its beautiful panorama and special charm. Together with other hikers we share our excitement about the hikes to come as well as the bed room. The next day we hike all up to the top of Mettelhorn with its 360° panorama and doing so, guess who is showing up more and more… If the weather and/or trail condition do not permit the access of the peak, we just make a beautiful looping hike over the meadows full of alpine flowers. After a second night at this charming place we start our truly unique hike in front of the Matterhorn. After a first steep section we reach a terrace on which our almost level trail leads us from “Kodak” moment to “Kodak” moment. The trail then starts to become rockier and we also have to loose some highs. Going down we are in front of the stony end of the Zmutt Glacier and have to face the reality of global heatening and civilisation. Crossing the floor of the retreated Glacier and its special vegetation we start to hike up again, avoiding as long as possible the crowd and staying as close to the famous mountain as possible until we reach the gondola station of Schwarzsee. Follows the easy way down, but the not so easy adjusting to town life, maybe with a stop at the cemetery of famous climbers of the Matterhorn and of course with some individual time to stroll around and wonder…

This really great week-end hike is for the experienced hikers not prone to strong vertigo and in good shape. (Heavy) hiking boots with good profile are a must as we cross snowfields and scree. Overnight is in a simple mountain hotel with shared facilities and dormitory and on 2337m altitude. Luggage has to be carried on the first and last day, the second day we just carry a daypack. There is the option of not fully doing the peak of the Mettelhorn, but just the first part up and down and to stroll around the mountain hut.
